Benefits of Glucosamine
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in cartilage matrix and synovial fluid between the joints. Studies have shown the benefits of glucosamine sulphate in osteoarthritis pain relief. Glucosamine is generally taken along with chondroitin sulphate for maximum benefits.
Generally only glucosamine sulphate has shown positive effects. Glucosamine in other forms do not appear effective. The sulfate structure helps to strengthen cartilage and aids glycosaminoglycan synthesis.
Benefits of Glucosamine
- Glucosamine sulphate in conjunction with chondroitin sulphate helps in strenghtening joint cartilage.
- Glucosamine supplements may allow patients to reduce their intake of NSAIDs which have side effects

- Glucosamine was given to athletes with knee injuries and helped to improve flexibility.
- Glucosamine has an anti-inflammatory effect in cases of general osteoarthritis.
What form of Glucosamine is most effective
Almost all clinical trials showing positive results have been conducted using glucosamine sulphate. Glucosamine sulphate is taken in many forms including capsules and liquids. Liquid Glucosamine is generally absorbed faster and has a 80-85% absorption rate. Studies indicate that pain relief took 1 to 2 weeks from taking glucosamine in liquid form as opposed to 6 to 10 weeks from capsule form.
Side effects of Glucosamine
Side effects are generally mild and include indigestion, drowsiness, sleeplessness, headaches, sensitivity to the sun and skin reactions. There may be temporary increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
