Benefits of Chondroitin

Over 20 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis. osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a degenerative joint disease that affects the knees, hips, back and the small joints in the fingers. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are two supplements that are most popular for osteoarthritis sufferers as it is said to relieve pain. These two supplements are either taken separately or together.

Benefits of Chondroitin

  • Chondroitin helps maintain water content and elasticity of the cartilage between joints.
  • Supplementation with chondroitin may enhance repair of degenerative injuries and inflammation
  • Chondroitin attracts fluid and nutrients into the synovial space and thus may help protect that area.
  • Being a natural, biologic polymer, there are very few side effects associated with chondroitin usage as opposed to pain killers such as Vioxx that was removed from the market.
  • Studies showed that glucosamine and chondroitin offer benefits for people with moderate to severe pain. Of 354 patients, 79 percent who took both supplements reported less pain compared with 54 percent who took placebos and 69 percent who took Celebrex.
  • Chondroitin is used to decrease pain and inflammation after extravasation with ifosfamide, vindesine, doxorubicin, or vincristine
  • Research shows that the effects of chondroitin may last for at least 1 year. and may slow progressive joint damage.
